Get to know Julia Montague (Jools) – Senior Facilitator
Meet Jools, whose passion for creating positive change is matched only by her dedication to running marathons (though she claims ‘never again’ after each one!). As a key member of our team driving gender equity, Jools shares her insights, experiences and what keeps her motivated both professionally and personally…
What’s your view on the current state of gender equity?
Obviously, the statistics aren’t what we would like them to be in terms of gender parity (134 years/5 generations away) and it remains a significant global challenge. However, I genuinely believe we are making significant steps in the right direction. Our team at Shape Talent is truly committed to advancing gender equity, and the work we do has real impact. The more we can bring awareness and educate organisations on the benefits of gender equity, the better.
What’s your own experience of the Three Barriers and what tips would you give women navigating their own barriers?
As a woman, a mother, a wife, and someone with career ambition, I have experienced barriers in all aspects of my life. As a woman in a same-sex marriage, these barriers can at times feel different and isolating. In the past, I made conscious decisions about what information to share with others, fearing negative impact. As I’ve progressed through my career journey and matured with a clearer sense of who I am and what I want, I’ve stepped away from the ‘shoulds’ and moved towards the ‘wants’ and the things that bring me purpose and joy.
It’s not easy, and recognising the steps involved can be challenging. While everyone has their own unique experiences, I would say things became easier (not easy, but easier) when I recognised I was doing things because I thought I ‘should’ as opposed to when I really wanted to. It’s also about looking at who you have around you to advocate for and support you.
What have you read recently and any top takeaway that our audiences might benefit from?
I recently read ‘Fix the System Not the Women’ by Laura Bates—it’s a really powerful book that brings systemic sexism into the light and provides actionable steps to address the issues. In essence, the problem lies within the system, not with the women themselves. There are plenty of key insights in the book, and I would encourage you to read it.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I’m a keen runner as it gives me headspace. I don’t do it for anyone else but me. I love running with my dog, Stanley, and to date, I’ve completed 8 half marathons and 2 marathons (I like a challenge!). After each one, I say ‘never again’… but it’s strangely addictive. I also love yoga, cooking (and food in general), and good wine!
